"Light on Life"-This Year's Must-Read
I am reading the latest book by B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Life. It is a must-read for anyone with an interest in yoga.
It was published last year; it was released in September 2005 when Mr. Iyengar was in the US on tour.
This book is not like other books written on the subject. There are no pictures of the different postures (asanas). There are no step by step instructions for practicing various sequences. If you are interested in these types of books there are many available, including his own "Light on Yoga", which is a valuable resource for all yoga practitioners, no matter what stage your are at in your practice, whether you are just beginning or have been practicing for many years.
What there is though, is his own thoughts, stories and experiences. He shares his wisdom and his feelings. It is a wonderful gift.
Mr. Iyengar's writtings and teachings appeal to me and I see in Light on Life, one of the main reaons why this is the case. Early on in the book, he writes that yoga is universal. It is for everyone. He stresses that we don't have to give up our day-jobs or renounce our selves and our possessions to be yogis. Yoga is for the modern world. In our contemporary times, yoga will help us live better lives by strengthening our bodies and freeing our minds. It will help us maintain steadiness and equanimity in a contantly changing world.
One of my favorinte points that this book brings to light is we must create steadiness in our postures so that our brains can float.
I will write more in this post once I get further through the book. It will be a book that I will read and re-read and then read again. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Thank-you Mr. Iyengar for this wonderful book.
